Overview:
student work // seven weeks
Google Scoop is a re-design and combination of Google’s two mobile news applications: Google News and Weather and Google Newsstand. This project was completed independently a few months before Google I/O 2018. Some of the main objectives of this project were to further develop my design intuition and to design closely with an existing visual identity.
My Role:
solo project
Read stories instead of articles, see sources’ stances out in the open, and get the whole scoop in a couple of swipes.
Google Scoop provides transparency and context for each news story and the sources that write them.
Google Scoop tells you news sources' stances on controversial topics, so you understand the point of view as you read their article.
Many people don't trust news media to separate fact from fiction, Google Scoop verifies the facts that are true using a simple algorithm.
Swiping through a story shows other sources' articles about the same event or issue, so you can hear from multiple perspectives and get the whole scoop.
Process:
Each news source tells the same story, but how they tell it informs users’ perspectives and decisions.
Redesigned and Combined Products:

Part of the research for Google Scoop included mapping the Google Newsstand and News & Weather mobile applications. In developing those flowcharts and designing this mobile application myself, I learned to appreciate the challenge of creating a user experience that is complex in nature and creates a simple experience for users.
Developing the fact verification feature gave me my first opportunity to design a simple algorithm to determine whether or not a fact would be verified.
