Data Catalog Strategy

The product strategy for Viasat’s data catalog, a tool for Viasat employees to easily find, understand, and activate data.

Design Problem

Viasat collects a lot of data from a variety of sources. A challenge Viasat and many other companies face today is making that data valuable - finding ways to use it to better guide business decisions that advance their goals and priorities. Finding, understanding, and activating data is difficult - especially with so many employees and with so much data. Our data catalog strategy project set out to design a data catalog that would make it easy for Viasat employees to find, understand, and use data to make better decisions.

Approach

With very little existing knowledge about the data needs of Viasat employees, we began with a discovery research event with various methods of design research to try to learn about the challenges that users faced when trying to find, understand, and activate data. We developed user archetypes and user journey maps to further contextualize our data. From there, we designed and user-tested a strategy using the product DNA framework. This is a framework that sets up guidance and design principles that can guide any decision product development teams need to make about the data catalog. This deliverable and others work informed Viasat’s metadata strategy and approach to data governance, as well.
